I am a life-long learner. I am always engaged in some sort of learning. These days most often through online sources. It makes me happy when I see all of the advertisements for education that is non-traditional-- SNHU, Coursera, Khan Academy, there are so many. My sister got me a pass to Master Class for Christmas, and I have just finally started a course by Billy Collins on Poetry. I am really enjoying it. He has little exercises to write down what you did throughout the day, very mundane things. I tend to get overly abstract, and I think what I am realizing about poetry is that it is very sensual. I got out some calligraphy pens. I struggled to get them to write, and so I splattered ink. All the more fun Then I wrote my 7 item list. This is actually a technique I use to stay on task. I definitely qualify as a person with ADD. They do say you study what is your issue. I have spent too much of my career studying the effects of pharmaceuticals to ever take any of them for non-life threatening issues. Most of the drugs out there only make the problem worse in the long run, and they come with many-many so-called side effects. I suggest listening to Peter Breggin, or watching any of the amazing documentaries out there like Generation Rx, Medication Nation or Prescription Thugs. There are better ways to build attention, and there are also many reasons to embrace the ADD mind. It is wonderfully creative and insightful. It was such a nice day today, I had two visitors. The first asked if I would be open on Wednesday again. I had to tell her that we are closed until Spring Break. Then later, I had another visitor. I had been playing with poetry. I asked her to read the top poem. Make a list and Act (She said) OR Stare into Space and Wonder... I asked her which one she would choose. She said Stare into Space and Wonder....About God. How Brilliant. She added it to my poem.
I had a terrible dream the other night that the Art Garage turned into nothing but a Snack Garage. I hope this is not true. Art is such a wonderful gift to people and society. I am hoping I can keep the true vision alive.
